On Thursday, 3 December 2013 officers from the European Commission raided the main offices of several major consumer electronic producers, such as Media-Saturn, Samsung and Phillips. The raid has reportedly taken place due to suspicions that the companies raided were working closely to limit the number of goods issued to the market, to keep prices up. This has happened in many instances, and if the European Commission has a reason to believe that a company is doing so, backed up with appropriate evidence, they carry the authority to fine the business up to 10% of their global earnings. This could spiral the companies into a lot of trouble, as they would then have to make redundancies and alter production to regenerate all the lost profit.
The companies have only said they are working closely with the Commission, and have refused to give any further information to the press. Companies such as Samsung would probably in the worst trouble at the moment, as they try to keep up with their rivals from Apple. If production slows down then Apple may widen the gap it already has, and that might more or less be the end for Samsung as a competitive market player! Let's see what happens next!
