Employees at the internet giant, Amazon.com have gone on strike in numerous areas around Germany. One of Germany's largest trade unions, Verdi, have confirmed that employees at logistics centres of Amazon will go on strike in cities such as Bad Herfeld, Leipzig and Graben.
Amazon employs close to 10,000 people in Germany, and the protests are being carried out due to low wages, and is not a new issue. This problem has been on going for months. The working conditions in the warehouses and centres themselves are horrendous. Documentaries and research has shown that working in an Amazon warehouse could very easily cause both mental, as well as physical sickness, as it is very unhygienic and unpleasant. Also, in an undercover and secret recording of the warehouse, by Professor Michael Marmot, showed that a task in the warehouse involves 11 miles of walking, and workers are expected to pick up orders every 33 seconds. At this point it gets thoroughly ridiculous. Amazon, is completely neglecting their worker safety.
To improve this, in an interview, Amazon said that they would now prioritise worker safety.
This is probably the worst possible time Amazon can be hit by this, as time gallops towards Christmas, and people buy gifts, make purchases because of the sales and what not!
